Who hasn’t yet heard about the many benefits of Pilates? Here’s a quick recap: elongate the body, tone muscles, strengthen the core, burn calories, improve posture and increase flexibility. Oh, and have fun! Joseph Pilates founded this method way back in the 1920’s and it’s based around a spring resistance system that “works the muscles in both directions giving you a longer, leaner look.” Sounds like a no brainer, right? The challenge with Pilates is that private sessions can be costly – upwards of $100. Or you can team up with a partner and share a session for around $35-40 each. Still, it’s pretty pricey. Fortunately, Pilate-ology opened up in the San Fernando Valley a little over a year ago and offers affordable reformer Pilates classes (no more than eight people per class) in a very clean and ultra chic studio. That’s right… not only do the owners, certified Pilates instructors Amy Berberich and Amy Briede (a.k.a. “the Amy’s”) know how to teach a kick-butt Pilates class, this sassy dynamic duo also have a kick-butt sense of style. The place just has a cool, cozy vibe. And, these girls also have a discriminating eye when it comes to assembling a tight team of certified instructors. In addition to “the Amy’s”, I take classes with Dani, Stephanie and Jenifer and I’m happy to report that I’m loving all of them. They each have their own unique brand of teaching and they bring great energy to every class. Plus, they all keep a watchful eye, make sure everyone is in proper form and will make modifications for anyone who needs extra guidance or care. You’ll never feel embarrassed about asking questions either. Pilate-ology offers monthly memberships or group classes and no matter which way you go, you’ll be paying a whole lot less than $100 per class. The package of 10 is $200 which breaks down to $20 per class. Ya see where I’m going here? And, then if you go for the $165 monthly membership (that’s for no more than 3 classes a week), it breaks down to less than $14 per class. Pretty darn good, right? What’s even better is “the Amy’s” are extending a very gracious deal to my loyal What I’m Loving subscribers. Three classes for $30 – yowza! That’s right, a mere $30 for 3 classes! This is for first time Pilate-ology clients only – just send an email to: firstname.lastname@example.org and make sure to type WhatImLoving Deal in the subject line. Here’s to a rockin’ rump, enjoy!
As a perennial devotee of trying to stay fit, I have a drawer full of exercise garb. For years I lived in the dark ages with my plain cotton t-shirts and loose fitting leggings. Fortunately I stepped up my look and moved into actual workout wear made from fabrics created for moving your body. Cozy yet feminine designs are key. When it comes to tops I look for something that caresses the body with enough room to breathe. And, I prefer my workout pants on the tighter side with a wider constructed waist band to help avoid feeling like they’re sucking the life out of me. When I discovered Under Armour my initial thought was “that line is just for dudes and athletes.” I had no idea they offered such a huge variety of stylish and sexy workout duds for women. Plus, they’re always on the cutting edge of technology with their fabrics and textiles, so this is a line that’s all about comfort and performance. Their Women’s Victory Tank Top is my go to. In addition to black this tank also comes in many different vibrant colors to punch up your look. And, then there’s my personal award-winner, the Gather N’ Give Capri. The ruched waistband makes these little numbers the perfect fit. They compress my body in all of the right places and help keep that unsightly muffin top from creeping out. After slipping on this gear I’m more rearing to go. Can’t beat that at 7 am.
